From the Back Cover
An up-to-date analysis of the SAR wavefront reconstruction signal theory and its digital implementation With the advent of fast computing and digital information processing techniques, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) technology has become both more powerful and more accurate. Synthetic Aperture Radar Signal Processing with MATLAB Algorithms addresses these recent developments, providing a complete, up-to-date analysis of SAR and its associated digital signal processing algorithms. This book introduces the wavefront reconstruction signal theory that underlies the best SAR imaging methods and provides clear guidelines to system design, implementation, and applications in diverse areas-from airborne reconnaissance to topographic imaging of ocean floors to surveillance and air traffic control to medical imaging techniques, and numerous others. Enabling professionals in radar signal and image processing to use synthetic aperture technology to its fullest potential, this work: * Includes M-files to supplement this book that can be retrieved from The MathWorks anonymous FTP server at ftp://ftp.mathworks.com/pub/books/soumekh * Provides practical examples and results from real SAR, ISAR, and CSAR databases * Outlines unique properties of the SAR signal that cannot be found in other information processing systems * Examines spotlight SAR, stripmap SAR, circular SAR, and monopulse SAR modalities * Discusses classical SAR processing issues such as motion compensation and radar calibration

I'm writing this review soon after having received the book so I haven't had the time to go and study everything yet. But I went quite extensively through the first two chapters (equation by equation), which is the basis for this review: _ The book: quite good and clear. All the equations are easy to follow even if I they are a bit scattered, or at least they seem to be: I wish they were numbered and referenced in the text. Instead, the reader has to find pages back and forth to connect the text with the equations. Mind you, doing this is a good exercise to eventually remember them. _ The algorithms: this is the weak point in my opinion. The title does say "with MATLAB Algorithms" and it is true, some MATLAB scripts are provided. But they are not properly referenced in the text and the scripts themselves are very raw. As part of a book, I would have expected a clear connection between the equations/sections and the algorithms, with clear comments and more details. Here, it is about one script per chapter and up to the reader to make the connections. Again, good as a homework I guess ("find which part of the script corresponds to which part of the chapter") but a bit frustrating when time is short.
This is a well written book about the different types of synthetic aperture radar. I purchased it to learn more about SAR, and it is a great addition to a general book on modern radar techniques. The only drawback is that it could have more content considering the cost of the book.
This book explains everying thing about SAR. Explanation is very deep and profound. BUT This book is not easy to study. Most parts of explanation is not exactly matching matlab code. Each person needs to review thoroughly each article.
there are many examples for matlab in this book, however it has little bit a lack of considerartion for beginer. I recommand this book to persons who need to practice the simulation or generation of SAR Image.
Wasn't there once a time, in the depths of the Cold War, when Synthetic Aperture Radar was highly classified? It is still jarring to me to see a book like this, telling all and sundry about the many applications to which it can be directed.Soumekh takes us through the basic theory. Intensive numerical analysis. Which is why Matlab has been drafted by him to aid us. A nice aid to following the concepts and seeing examples that are non-trivial. The hardest sections of each chapter are on the reconstruction of the data. That is, in the finding of possible sources that gave rise to the observed signals. You would do well before reading this book to be fully conversant about [Fast] Fourier Transforms and scattering of radiation from objects. Put it this way, if Point Spread Function doesn't mean anything to you, then the book might be of limited use in your situation. He discusses important geometries, like stripmap and the circular SAR. But just as importantly, there is good mention of applications like aerial reconnaissance or surveying.
SAR imaging owes a lot to inverse scattering theory, coherence theory, Fourier optics and holography. Luckily, Soumekh comes from an optics background and therefore, is very comfortable with all the optics stuff. He has done an excellent job in presenting different modalities of SAR imaging like stripmap and spotlight and implementing the algorithms in matlab. There is a lot of depth in his book and every time I read it I understand something that I could not understand when I read it last time. I have become a fan of Soumekh. I also attended one of his tutorials based on this book in the SPIE symposium in Orlando Florida.
Could use many more practical examples. All of the reconstruction code included for this book generates incomprehensible images. I wish there was a book that included reconstruction code of actual SAR data with real SAR images so that you can actually tell if you reconstruction algorithm is working and have the ability to evaluate different algorithms on the same data set.
To me, this book's greatest strength is instant applicability of theories and recipes presented in it. Virtually all topics in SAR are covered with great quality. There is no hard tie to any particular type of radar signals, which makes it very versatile.Certainly one of the best engineering books I ever bought.
